Thursday, February 2, 2012 | | | Safer Workplaces Should be Priority | | Every day we work to protect the rights of injured people. We battle insurance companies, employers and even politicians, all of whom are more concerned with the "bottom line" than protecting the lives and health of working people. If they were really concerned about saving money they would do what is necessary to keep workers safe, as opposed to just making life difficult for those already injured? Perhaps the answer is that companies and politicians are not particularly concerned about the safety of Illinois workers. OSHA reports that each day 12 workers die on the job, more than 4,500 nationally, each year, while millions more are injured. OSHA has found that Workplace Injury Prevention Programs are overwhelmingly successful in limiting both injuries and the costs associated with treating those injuries. Why then doesn't Illinois have an Injury Prevention Program? 34 other states have a combination of mandatory and voluntary programs that include laws, regulations and insurance premium reducing incentives that have made the workplace safer while reducing the costs associated treating injured workers. The discussion in Springfield continues to revolve around what more can be done to limit the rights of injured workers. The discussion should be how can we make the workers of Illinois safer and prevent injuries from occurring. | | New Arbitrator Appointees | | On January 27, 2012 Governor Quinn announced the appointment of three additional Arbitrators at the Illinois Workers' Compensation Commission: William Gallagher, Douglas McCarthy and Brandon Zanotti. While all three new Arbitrators have practiced law in the Metro East area, Arbitrator Gallagher will be assigned to the Urbana/Springfield/Quincy rotation and Arbitrators McCarthy and Zanotti will work in Chicago. They join the 29 Arbitrators appointed in November 2011. All appointments are subject to Senate confirmation. It is our understanding that the confirmation hearings could be held in February 2012. | | Follow Us | | Ridge & Associates is now on Facebook and Twitter.
